Carbon+Alt+Delete announces the launch of an ambitious innovation project focusing on artificial intelligence (AI). The company, which develops software that enables companies to measure and reduce their carbon footprint, has received a €300,000 grant from VLAIO to deeply integrate AI into its platform. The aim is to reduce the time an expert needs for CO₂ reporting by a factor of 5 to 10.
Rapidly growing demand for CO₂ reporting Despite the introduction of the Omnibus Directive, which reduced the number of companies in Europe with sustainability reporting obligations from 50,000 to around 10,000, the demand for CO₂ reporting continues to rise sharply. Companies are increasingly being asked by their customers, investors and partners to provide insight into their climate impact. Even those who are not directly subject to reporting requirements cannot afford to lag behind: large companies expect emission data from their suppliers, causing a chain reaction in sectors such as logistics, agri-food and manufacturing. ‘CO₂ emissions are no longer just an environmental issue, but a business risk,’ says Kenneth Van den Bergh, CEO and co-founder of Carbon+Alt+Delete. "Our software helps companies not only comply with regulations, but also remain competitive in a market that increasingly demands transparency."
AI as a lever for experts A major challenge in the market is the lack of people with in-depth knowledge of CO₂ reporting. Carbon+Alt+Delete sees AI as the key to breaking through this bottleneck. By integrating machine learning and natural language processing, the software will largely automate complex tasks such as data collection, emission calculation and reporting. Today, preparing a CO₂ report for a medium-sized company takes an average of 100 to 200 hours. With its AI functionalities, Carbon+Alt+Delete aims to reduce this to 10 to 20 hours. This will enable sustainability consultants – the exclusive target group of Carbon+Alt+Delete – to serve many more companies within the same time frame. "By using AI smartly, we want to reduce the time investment per file by a factor of 5 to 10,‘ says Van den Bergh. ’Sustainability consultants can then focus on what really matters: guiding companies towards impactful reduction strategies. We don't believe that AI will replace the expert, but it will strengthen them and make them more efficient."
Support from VLAIO on the road to European leadership For this innovation project, Carbon+Alt+Delete is receiving a €300,000 grant from VLAIO (Flemish Agency for Innovation & Entrepreneurship). This support enables the company to significantly accelerate the development of AI functionalities and thus build a competitive advantage in a rapidly growing market. Since its foundation in 2020, Carbon+Alt+Delete has grown to become a leading player in Europe. Today, hundreds of sustainability consultants use the software to manage the carbon footprint of more than 1,000 companies. The company has customers in more than 20 European countries. With the AI integration, Carbon+Alt+Delete is taking a new step towards European leadership in the CO₂ reporting and reduction market. ‘Our mission is clear,’ concludes Van den Bergh. "We want to lower the threshold for climate action and give companies the tools to report and reduce faster, cheaper and better."
